Cummins Tuning
Improve the performance of your Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 diesel truck with Motor Ops custom tuning.
Dodge introduced the 6.7L Cummins CMC engine into its light duty pickup line half-way through the year in 2007 and remained in the 2008 and 2009 models. The 6.7L Cummins engine was also complimented by a new automatic transmission introduction to their lineup - the 68RFE 6 speed transmission. Another big change was emissions equipment; every light-duty Dodge Ram with a 6.7L Cummins was now equipped with an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). In factory form the 6.7L Cummins delivered superior drive ability and quick torque delivery compared to its predecessor, the 5.9L Cummins CMB. Overall, the 6.7L Cummins engine provides great power and torque delivery with minimal emissions output.
CMD – This was the first introduction of the 4th Gen Body Style in the 2010 model, which gave the vehicle a much more aggressive and modern look than the previous body style. The CMD trucks saw a significant boost in torque output over the CMC. The CMD produced approximately 310 RWHP (rear wheel horsepower) and 800 ft. lbs of torque. That is over 150 more ft lbs of torque over its predecessor. Dodge had many new trim levels that got introduced in 2010, many of which have continued to be used right to this day. The CMD is in the 2011 and 2012 Dodge Ram models as well.
CME – The CME was introduced in 2013 and included the addition of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction) was added to the emissions equipment used on the vehicle. CME equipped Dodge Ram trucks now were equipped with an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), SCR, DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst), DEF, and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). The addition of DEF injection allowed for less EGR usage while not increasing the NOx levels. Over the course of the CME RPO there were certain years that saw significant increases in torque. It is also important to note that different models of the vehicles were offered with different power levels due to the holding capacity of the transmission used. CME is present in the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Dodge 2500 and 3500 models.
While the 68RFE transmission continued to be offered and equipped on the majority of the CME vehicles, the Aisin transmission was introduced and marketed as the heavy-duty version and sold with a higher factory horsepower and torque rating.
CMF – In 2019 Dodge introduced some significant changes to the 6.7L Cummins including fuel system changes, some changes to the emissions system, a new engine control unit, increased power output, more torque delivery, and improved towing capacity for the high output models.
In 2019 RAM discontinued the ability to purchase a vehicle with a G56 clutch in it which means that all transmissions in this RPO are automatic. The RAM 2500 and 3500 were available for purchase with both the 68RFE transmission and the Aisin transmission and depending on which one you selected would decide which power level you have. The Aisin equipped pickup model is advertised with 400 factory horsepower and 1000 ft. lbs of torque while the 68RFE equipped pickup model is advertised with 370 factory horsepower and 850 ft. lbs of torque.
The new fuel system that was introduced in 2019 featured a CP4.2 injection pump which allowed the vehicle to be run at higher fuel pressure than previous years. This allows for the injector to stay on a shorter period of time but inject the same amount of fuel into the cylinder for combustion. This technology leads to more power and less emissions output. The Bosch CP4.2 has been known to have reliability issues; especially if the driver runs the fuel level down to a low level and allows air to get into the fuel system. Some owners experienced fuel system failure due to this; RAM recognized the issue and discontinued the CP4.2 and has replaced it with the CP3 that was used in all previous generations of the 6.7L Cummins.
How will Motor Ops Tuning improve my Cummins 6.7L?
Cummins trucks excel at delivering extremely quick torque which makes the driver’s experience exceptional. The quick torque delivery also aids in fuel economy and easy towing. The Dodge RAM Cummins line really caters to people who use their truck for things like towing, construction, farming etc. You can see it in the factory equipped features they have added in recently like automatically levelling air ride suspension, factory equipped storage in convenient locations and through their messaging in their advertising.
Stock Cummins falls short overhead power. When we begin our tuning R&D, we analyze the factory equipment and look for what the limiting factor for horsepower and torque are going to be. Up until 2017 all models had roughly the same limit in power on a stock turbo (530 to 550 RWHP). Around that time, GM and Ford introduced new models that moved that headroom up while Dodge stayed consistent. I have a hard time considering this a short coming because the 6.7L Cummins has so many other advantages over its competitors like reliability, consistency, simple operation, quick power and torque delivery.

Cummins TCM Tuning
Transmission tuning is an essential component in reliability with trucks equipped with a 68RFE transmission. The factory 68RFE calibration leaves a lot to be desired in terms of power and torque transfer and drive ability. Simply put – our transmission tuning allows for a more direct transfer of power to the ground and improves the holding capabilities of the transmission. Under light throttle or cruising conditions your transmission will shift much like it does from the factory – no big jerks or rough shifting. As you increase throttle input the transmission will give you crisp and precise shifts, lock the converter at the optimal time, and transfer all the power the 6.7L is producing and put it right to your tires – where you need it.
EFI Live vs EZ Lynk for your Cummins tuner?
You’re looking for a Cummins tuner, and our complete tuning packages include either EFI Live AutoCal or EZ Lynk AutoAgent. Box tuners such as banks tuner (derringer) or edge tuner are cheap options for Cummins owners, but after making the investment in your truck, these box tuners leave a lot on the table in terms of drive ability, peak power, and reliability. Motor Ops Cummins tuning will run smoother, produce more power, have lower exhaust gas temperatures under load, and prove to be more reliable than any box tuner on the market. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.
There are a few different programming options for Cummins trucks – the two main platforms that most users chose are either EZ Lynk or EFI Live. EFI Live is available for all years including the older models 2006-2009. EZ Lynk is only available for 2010 or newer. Both platforms offer a very reliable but offer a bit of a different experience to the user. It is important to note that the quality of the tune from one platform to the other will be identical.
EZ Lynk is a cloud based tuning platform where “Technicians” (tuners) provide clients with access to their tunes via the EZ Lynk Cloud. The EZ Lynk Auto Agent 2 allows the user or installer to fetch the tune from their cloud after they have purchased the tune. Users connect the Auto Agent to the OBD2 port and connect to the Auto Agent using their Android or iOS phone or tablet. The user can then use their phone or tablet as a digital gauge display and as a programming device. We provide simple instructions and support.
EFI Live Auto Cal V3 follows a more traditional tuning sequence where the tuning company such as Motor Ops loads their tunes onto the EFI Live Auto Cal and the user simply plugs the EFI Live Auto Cal into the OBD2 port and the tune is loaded in using the EFI Live Auto Cal to carry out the commands. We also provide simple instructions and support for EFI installations.
Should I have a dealer do my tuning?
Many of our customers go to a Motor Ops dealer to have their Cummins truck tuned and have other various performance parts installed if they are uncomfortable doing in themselves. Call us and we will recommend a local performance shop if you don't already have one. Motor Ops has over 800 dealers that span across North America, Australia, New Zealand, Central America, and Europe.
What about Warranty work, selling or trading my tuned Cummins?
If you need to take your vehicle in for warranty work, we recommend removing any aftermarket parts and reinstalling the factory components and resetting to near factory calibrations. If you are going to trade or sell your tuned Cummins truck, we recommend calling your dealer or one in the area and getting an idea on what your vehicle value would be if it were tuned and what vehicle value would be if it were stock. Typically, dealers are going to give you a much better trade-in value on a vehicle that is completely stock. If you are selling your truck privately then selling it stock versus tuned really depends on what the local market is calling for. Some quick calls to some used car lots and asking how many diesel pickups they usually have in stock, how quickly they run through them, and if any of them are tuned could provide some great education. Additionally, you can do a quick search through on-line marketplaces, social media, etc. Markets differ quite a bit from area to area and the only right answer is to do some research and figure out what increases your trade-in value or private sale value the most.
Other recommended Cummins modifications
Every Cummins from 2006 to 2021 really benefits from an aftermarket intake system with a non-oiled filter. This reduces the amount of work the turbo has to perform in order to get the air through the filter. It provides a smooth tunnel for the air to travel along before it hits the compressor side of the turbo. On the CMF trucks (2019 – 2020) we suggest doing a CP3 conversion for reliability and ensuring that if the driver does run the fuel level low you don’t end up with a failed fuel system.
